Dora Window Surprise Dollhouse
Use Dora’s changing window scenes to notice a detail, predict a change and invent a short room-to-room story in the Window Surprise Dollhouse.

The play at a glance
Let the view outside suggest the next scene
The Dora Window Surprises Dollhouse pairs an ordinary figure-play setting with changing window pictures and corresponding sounds. The view can become a prompt: what is Dora doing now, and what might she do next?
Take time to notice one scene before changing it. A small detail in a window can be enough to begin a visit, an outing or a quiet evening at home.
Change the view with the documented controls
The T3989 sheet shows the whole house closing and reopening to reveal another window scene. The Scroll button also changes scenes; the separate Sound button plays related sounds and phrases. For electronic play, the switch underneath has low- and high-volume positions as well as off.
The seven scenes cover summer, autumn and winter in daytime and nighttime, plus a spring day. Choose a visible scene as your starting point rather than trying to cycle through all seven immediately.
These are the set’s built-in scenes and responses. A child supplies the characters’ intentions and the next event in the story.
Notice, predict, change and tell
For this original activity, look at one window and name a detail you can actually see. Then make a prediction: will the next view look lighter, darker or like a different season? A prediction is a guess to compare with the next picture, not a question with a required correct answer.
Use one documented way to change the scene, then describe what appeared. Listen to the corresponding audio if you want to include it. Give Dora one action that fits your interpretation: prepare to go out, welcome someone home, or settle down for the evening.
A second player can supply the next sentence. Keep the same beginning and let each person suggest a different ending. The house provides a setting; it does not decide which story is right.
Keep the room layout useful
Begin with a place to sit and a clear path through the rooms. Move the figure by hand between two destinations before filling the house with furniture. If an accessory blocks the route or makes a figure hard to reach, rearrange the furniture and try again.
Mattel lists Dora and a couch with the base T3989 house. Kitchen, bathroom and bedroom furniture packs, along with additional figure packs, were separate products. The retained picture shows a furnished play scene and should not be used as a promise of everything in one box.
You can invent a visitor or a meal in words when a particular figure or accessory is absent. The activity does not require completing a collection.
Try a story without pressing a button
After exploring a scene, leave it in place and play an ordinary visit. Who arrives? Where do they sit? What do they talk about before leaving? Compare that freely narrated version with one prompted by a scene change.
Neither version needs to be more advanced. They simply give the player different starting points. Before folding the house for storage, move loose pieces clear of the closing sections and follow the matching guide. Keep T3989 instructions with this house rather than substituting directions for the older Talking Dollhouse or Magical Castle.

Reviewed October 16, 2026 against Mattel’s T3989 product record and the complete T3989-0920 instruction sheet, including its control and house-opening diagrams. The sheet specifies closing and reopening the house, or using Scroll, to change scenes; Sound plays scene-related audio.
