The play at a glance

A new look for the same car

The Custom Color Shop turns a compatible Color Shifters vehicle’s visit into a small design activity. Cold water changes its appearance, and warm water changes it back. The detailing pen lets a player work on a smaller area.

Choose one change to notice before sending the car around the shop. The effect belongs to the intended vehicle; it is not paint mixed by the child, and ordinary die-cast cars should not be expected to change color.

Prepare the water and the surface

Have an adult prepare the water according to the P8616 guide: icy water for the tank and warm water at 30–40°C (86–104°F) for the customizing pen and color reset. Follow the guide’s fill illustrations. Its warning rules out water above 48°C (120°F); hotter water is not a way to improve the effect.

Protect the play surface from splashes and put a towel within reach. Choose the intended Color Shifters car and notice its starting appearance. You can describe the body and roof separately so a small change is easier to spot.

Watch one color change

Use the illustrated play route to take the car through the cold-water feature. Look at the result before immediately launching again. Which area changed? Is a detail easier to see against the new color?

A partner can describe the “before” while you describe the “after.” This is an observation of the particular car in front of you, not a promise that every Color Shifters vehicle has the same colors or pattern.

Add one small detail

Use the supplied water pen as shown in the guide to work on a small area of the changed car. Try one line or patch, then compare it with the surrounding surface. Leave the rest alone long enough to see the difference.

The pen uses water; do not add ink, paint or household dyes. For another design, reset the color using the intended warm-water method and choose a different area. Keeping the change small makes the comparison more interesting than covering the whole car at once.

Finish the visit and dry the set

The original description includes a spinner and a departing launch. Follow the matching play diagram for those actions, keeping the exit clear. The spinner does not replace the end-of-play cleanup.

Empty, rinse, clean and thoroughly dry the pieces before storage, as the guide directs. Avoid prolonged intense heat or direct sunlight. Once everything is dry, give the car a destination in a separate road story, or save the next design idea for another visit to the shop.

The historical record

Original Toysit coverage

The complete original product description and Hot Wheels paragraph remain below. The new activity uses the matching P8616 guide to explain water preparation and cleanup. The older speed-and-adventure language is historical commentary, not a result from testing the toy.

Change and detail your Hotwheels car into a different looking diecast vehicle

Turbo launch up the ramp and splash through the waterfall for an instant transformation. Hit the ground level to fuel up your hot new ride. Next head to the customization station and use the water pen to give your car some attitude. Pull into the extreme spinner to dry off and launch out onto the open road. Includes one Hot Wheels Color Shifters vehicle.

The key to Hot Wheels' popularity lies in their ability to ignite a sense of speed and adventure. Each car represents a world of possibilities, inspiring young minds to create epic racing scenarios and daring stunts.

Sources and editorial notes

Reviewed October 15, 2026 against the original image, Mattel’s P8616 product record and its P8616-0520 illustrated guide. The tank, curved routes, customizing pen and spinner match the pictured shop. The guide specifies icy water and warm water at 30–40°C (86–104°F), warns against water above 48°C (120°F), and requires thorough drying before storage. These directions are for this set and its intended Color Shifters vehicle, not another color-change playset. No physical set was tested.
