The Hummer brand has a history deeply rooted in military application, originating with the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), colloquially known as the Humvee. Developed by AM General in the 1980s for the U.S. military, the Humvee was designed for durability, versatility, and off-road capability. Its widespread recognition during the Gulf War led to civilian interest, and in 1992, the first civilian version, dubbed the Hummer H1, was introduced. In 1999, General Motors acquired the brand and expanded the lineup with the H2 and H3 models, which were less utilitarian and more adapted for everyday use. While popular for their rugged appearance and off-road prowess, Hummers also faced criticism for their poor fuel economy and large size. Production of the civilian models ceased in 2010, but the brand was revived in 2020 with the announcement of the GMC Hummer EV, an all-electric pickup truck and SUV, aligning the iconic brand with modern sustainability goals.
