The name 'Tonka' was adopted in 1955, inspired by Lake Minnetonka; the word "Tonka" is derived from the Dakota Sioux word 'Tanka' or 'Tonka,' which means 'great' or 'big.' The first set of Tonka trucks was produced in 1947 and included a crane and clam, a steam shovel, and a scoop. These early models were made out of high-quality steel, setting a standard for durability that the brand has maintained. Over the years, Tonka trucks have become synonymous with ruggedness and quality, often passed down from one generation to the next. In the 1980s, Tonka Corporation became a publicly-traded company and expanded its product line to include other types of toys. However, it's the trucks that have continued to capture imaginations.
