Neopets Trading Card Game Starter Set
Explore the original Wizards of the Coast Neopets starter set and turn three cards or creature drawings into a tiny imaginary gallery.

The play at a glance
A box of creatures, objects and possible adventures
The tall gold box brings a crowd of colorful Neopets together beneath the words “Two-Player Starter Set.” Inside the original game, illustrated creatures and objects became cards to collect and use across a shared playing area. Their pictures also invite a quieter kind of play: finding a small visual detail and imagining the story around it.
The original two-player starter
The 2003 promotional brochure describes two 30-card starter decks, a rulebook, a playmat and two dice, with a bonus booster pack. Those are the documented original contents; an opened collection may have a different assortment today. The rulebook’s illustrated examples show creatures alongside equipment, items and other kinds of cards.
The official game used contests in strength, agility, magic and intelligence. Its advanced booklet builds on the starter playmat, which it recommends learning first. For the activity here, set the game rules aside and look closely at the art: a creature’s ears, a curious object, a patch of sky, or something happening behind the main figure.
Try a Neopian exhibit trail
Imagine that you are arranging a very small museum exhibition. Three cards—or three invented creature drawings—are enough for this original Toysit activity.
- Pick a visible detail. Choose one thing you can point to in each picture. Write a short observation on separate paper, such as “curled tail” or “bright blue background.”
- Name the gallery. Invent a title that connects the three: “Visitors After Rain,” “The Lost-and-Found Room” or “Things Seen from a Treehouse.”
- Add an imagined connection. Beside each observation, write one sentence explaining that picture’s place in your exhibition. A small creature might be the museum guide; an illustrated object might be its favorite exhibit.
- Give the tour. Arrange the labels beside the cards and invite another player to follow the trail. Then trade curator roles and try a new order.
Keep the visible observation and the invented museum story on separate lines. A visitor can enjoy both, and suggest a fourth drawing that would fit the gallery.
Return the collection after the tour
Use a clean, dry surface and keep writing, tape and glue on the paper labels. Finish by returning borrowed cards to their owner’s chosen storage. Save the exhibit title and drawings for another visit; the story can grow with the cards already at hand.
