Interactive, connected, programmable and AI
These labels describe different features and can overlap. An interactive toy responds to an input such as a button, touch or sound. A programmable toy follows instructions the player supplies. A connected toy exchanges information with another device or an online service. AI can be used for tasks such as recognizing speech or generating a response.
A toy can use a trained AI model without learning from each child during play. Saving a name or remembering a preference is also different from retraining a model. Ask which capability the manufacturer documents for the exact product.

Check the service as well as the toy
Read the official manual, app requirements and privacy information. Identify the controls an adult can use and the functions that remain after a subscription or service ends. Record an unanswered question as unknown rather than treating an appealing demonstration as an answer.
For conversation features, examine the supported topics, parent controls and the way the manufacturer handles inappropriate or inaccurate responses. Generated output can vary. A single successful exchange does not establish how the system will behave in every situation.
