The play at a glance

One character, a whole cast of expressions

Gary perches above SpongeBob’s face, a net waits beside him, and extra eyes and mouths spread the possibilities across the picture. This Switch ’Em Up set invites a player to build the expression that suits the next little scene.

The matching early package shows removable face pieces and several arrangements of the character. A wide-eyed look, a drooping pair of eyelids or a different mouth can become the turning point in a story the player tells aloud.

Try a three-face jellyfish story

Draw three empty picture frames on a sheet of paper and label them beginning, surprise and ending. Imagine that SpongeBob has gone looking for a jellyfish, only to discover that it wants to join him for lunch.

  1. Choose an expression using the set’s intended interchangeable face pieces. Give the first frame a spoken caption: SpongeBob has spotted something pink.
  2. Change the expression for the surprise. Perhaps the jellyfish has brought an enormous picnic basket.
  3. Choose a final face and tell how the meeting ends. Gary might appoint himself the picnic inspector.

Set the loose pieces in a tray between changes and follow the particular set’s directions for fitting them. Keep the small accessories with players for whom the set is suitable.

Change only the middle picture

Keep the beginning and ending, but give the surprise a new expression. Tell a new sentence that makes the ending fit. A delighted lunch guest and a suspicious lunch guest can lead to two very different versions of the same scene.

For a drawing version, sketch three SpongeBob faces and add the captions yourself. The net and Gary can appear in the pictures as story clues.

Sources and editorial notes

Three photographs of an early Switch ’Em Up package were reviewed, including its front, back and face close-up. Gary, the jellyfish, net and face pieces match the pictured assortment; some small package text is too soft to read reliably. No exact combination count, full accessory inventory or handling guide is asserted. Later cook-themed assortments were excluded. The broad benefits in the preserved essay are historical commentary. The activity is original editorial work, not physical testing.
