The play at a glance

A small vehicle enters a mystery

The Hero City Haunted House wraps a vehicle route in spooky scenery and surprises. Mattel’s B4615 guide matches this older playset, rather than the later portable set with a similar name.

The original photograph captures one part of the route: a green vehicle on the hand-shaped bridge. It is a detail view, so the full house and its sequence of actions are better understood through the manufacturer’s diagrams.

Follow the route through the scenery

The guide shows a car elevator, a bridge encounter and pop-up ghost features. The player prepares or triggers these actions. That makes the house a setting for a sequence: arrive, move to another area, discover something and leave.

When looking at the photograph, start with the vehicle and ask where it might have come from. Then invent a destination beyond the bridge. A small detail can become the middle of a larger journey.

Let the child choose the surprise

A mystery can be funny, gentle or spooky. Ask the storyteller which kind they want, and let them change it. A ghost can be a friendly host, a strange sound can be a misplaced bell, and the final discovery can be someone preparing a party.

There is no need to turn discomfort into a challenge. Skipping an effect or choosing a familiar ending is a valid way to play. The old essay’s bravery language is not a reason to press for a frightening experience.

Give the driver something to find

A lost invitation, a missing delivery or a trail of footprints gives the driver a reason to explore. Each stop can reveal one clue. The ending should explain how those clues fit together, even if the explanation is deliberately silly.

Create a friendly mystery

  1. Choose who lives in an imaginary house.
  2. Invent one missing object the visitor wants to find.
  3. Draw three clues along a vehicle route.
  4. Decide how much surprise the story should contain.
  5. Reveal a friendly explanation and let the visitor head home.

This independent paper story needs no Haunted House set. Its scenes are optional inventions, not manufacturer rules or a claim that spooky play produces a particular emotional benefit.

The historical record

Original Toysit coverage

The complete original product description and haunted-house essay remain below. Its claims about bravery, fear and emotional development were not measured. The historical glow-parts claim describes the vehicle, not evidence that the entire house glows.

Sources and editorial notes

Both pages of Mattel’s B4615 instructions were visually reviewed. They show the vehicle route, elevator and manually triggered surprises. The later M0063 Adventure Set was not used as a substitute. No lights, sounds, glow effect or surviving mechanism was tested. The friendly mystery is an independent, optional storytelling activity.
