*sigh* this barbie is funny, but she strikes me as the sort of preppy Wiccan who got into it for the "power" :)
anywho...i'd like to see a "godly christian" barbie now...this one seems to be wearing a really short tube top--i THINK i can see her midriff above the waist of that robe--i wonder what they'd put "christian" barbie in?

I think this is awesome, very cool! Haven't seen her on the shelves, but I'd buy her if I saw her on the shelves. I'm 39 yrs old and have grown up loving Barbie, and still do.

I just think this is a great product! Eventhough I'm 21, I probably will buy one of these dolls. And yes, I am a practicing member of the Wiccan religion (HPS, Eclectic Tradition). I don't entirely think this doll is mocking Wicca, however I do think Mattel is taking advantage of the "wicca trend", however, I am pleased that they portray this 'enchantress' as a good looking, happy fun-loving woman, instead of a wrinkled, green-skinned, evil hag that most witches are percieved as. Bravo Mattel! and keep up the good work! I hope to see a Secret Spells Ken on the market as well. If I had children, I would purchase this doll in an effort to explain Wicca to my child. *)0(* Blessed Be, EyrtheFyre, HPS

I find it somewhat amusing. A few hundred years ago, witches were burnt and mass hysteria broke out at the mere mention of a witch. Witchcraft has gone from total taboo, to being marketed and cashed in on in modern day. Progess of mankind, huh.

I want to be just like Barbie,,, she has everything....

...I enjoy the idea of Branching out towards new horizons. I do not enjoy the mockery the Wiccan religion, which is what Wiccanism is; a religion. The notion that you treat witchcraft as if it's nothing more than a hobby sickens me. I wonder if we'll get an alter boy ken...complete with glory hole in his rear...

This is just too funny! I need one of these, just because it made me snarf ice water.

OMG...This shouldn't be "secret spells barbie," but "Fluffy Pink Harry Potter Ripoff Barbie." >:-D Personally I find it a bit gruesome (pink!), but it's just for fun. And, speaking as a Buddhist ex-witch (who has nothing but respect for paganism), I don't think this has anymore to do with the Old Ways than HP or "Bewitched." Smiles, everyone, smiles!!

It is trash like this witch is responsible for the downfall of America! At every turn one finds the Christian ethic being attached. What's next, dogs and cats sleeping together, world peace or a recall of republican politicians? Will it never end?

Oh gag me with a frikkin spork...Why haven't I heard of outraged parents burning these just like they burn the Harry Potter books? "Oh no, Barbie does magic, she's the consort of Satan! Let's throw her on the bonfire!" Puh-leeze. Just because Barbie's had some plastic surgery done (get it? plastic, roflmgdfao) and doesn't have a scar on her head, she's exempt from the pyre. That's discrimination. By the way, where the hell's Sorority Skank Barbie? Or Lactating Barbie? Or Transgender Barbie? Where, I ask thee! Wheeeeerrrrrrrreeeee.....

Yes I have being a 13 year old wiccan that gets amused easily I think its awsome plus I realy dont think it has anything to do with wicca I think its kinda like a sabrina the teenage witch type of thing. its cool but their not gunna sell much or maybe they will because on one debate half the population of america is christian and anything that has to deal with witchcraft or witches and wizards there gunna keep their kid away from but on the other hand Harry Potter has to deal with witch craft and ect. and it's the number one book world wide...so yeah I kinda confused myself because I'm argueing with myself ask me later

Thanks for making my Samhain season a bit more enjoyable. I needed a good laugh, and this list alone has provided quite a few. Hell, I may just go out and buy Kayla; and to think, I was the little girl that decapitated her Barbies and hung their heads from the ceiling fan by their hair... BB!

This is endorsing witch craft. I have nothing against witch craft but it is dangerouse to not educate children the real nature of this old religion.

The post about 'lurid images of night fever, unbuttoned shirts, and bodies writhing in sickening, driving rhythms' was a joke, for heaven's sake. Some of you need to lighten up in a big way!

Hmmm.... Dungeons and Dragons...Protested...made $$$...played it, grew out of it... Samon Rushdie (Sp? *I really dont care*)...protested...made $$$...boring..couldn't read it all without snoring in 5mins or less. Harry Potter...Protested...made $$$...actually I enjoyed the books...they were cute. Marilyn Manson...Protested...made $$$...Went to one of the shows to see the hoopla, no blood, no spit-drinking or bathead biting, no bibles burned, and his head couldn't rotate 360 degrees...bored stiff...Alice Cooper WAY better...yes Im OLD. Give her black hair, a pentagram and a black mini (hey..its fantasy right?)...and I'd say...WAYcool... Oh well...hopefully Goth barbie will be a looker...pink makes me puke... and hey!! while were at it...where's the Black (African-American for the PC) Wicca Barbie?! You know those old Southern Grandmothers are the ones you got the spells from anyways?!? My Grandma's had 'em...scared me stiff...!! Sister inherited all that stuff..Now I cant pick on her (even tho were BOTH old now) anymore!!

It's a good thing this Barbie is not being marketed as a Witch. No self-respecting Witch would dress like that, and Witchcraft is not about mixing fake Kool-Aid.
-
- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 13:27:36 (EST)
I actually liked the Halloween Barbie with the purple eyes and orange and purple costume that was out last year a lot better - I bought one for my sister-in-law whose birthday is Oct. 31st. I'd love to see Barbie all done up in black and purple, with the purple eyes and purple and black streaks in her hair. If you want to appeal to the Harry Potter crew, lose the pink and shiny stuff. And anyone who thinks Barbie dolls are something to *worry* about, or would try to dissuade the manufacturer from making something that appeals to *other people* has entirely too much time on their hands. If you're not into "magic and witchcraft" or the mini-skirted Pamela Anderson white trash Wal-Martian Princess ideal, DON'T BUY ONE.

This sounds like a wonderful fantasy play set. I haven't seen it in stock, but it was mentioned derogatorily in a newspaper article (with a URL link to this page) and I wanted to evaluate it for myself.

I have a 3 year-old daughter and desperately wonder how I will ever be able to prevent her from being exposed to the likes of Barbie and her ilk; so far we have escaped, but I fear this will be short-lived thanks to societal influence. I just shudder when I see that "pink aisle" in the toy department...

To the poster who wrote "lurid images of "night fever," unbuttoned shirts, and bodies writhing in sickening, driving rhythms under colored strobe lights" - WOW, have you got some issues! Please excuse my frankness and plain language, but you need to get laid! To see all that sickness in a doll shows a really sick mind. I would also recommend increasing you meds.

- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 12:39:07 (EST)
Oh wow. So does this mean that witches now wear pink to work magick? Time to go update the wardrobe, lose all the black... and I guess I need to spray paint my cauldron pink, also. And let's not forget the fairy dust..er, glitter...

I suppose some witches wear hot pink, but I've been a witch for about 15 years, and dark red is as close as I've been. I'm vaguely insulted:Witchcraft and nature worship are my religion. What's next, Priest Barbie? Nun Barbie? Pope Barbie? Jerry Falwell Ken?

A woman with Barbie's measurements would have to be 7 feet tall or walk on all fours to support that ridiculous weight. Get real, Mattel. And don't bother to cash in on Paganism, because its virtues are SO-O-O--O-O far removed from the image of woman that Mattel represents!

Oh man, thanks SO much for the morning chuckles. It's a TOY people, used to expand our children's imaginations. You know, that thing in your head that allows you to dream and think of OTHER possibilities? That wonderful ability to go looking for unicorns (in the eyes of a child) or believing that Santa Claus is real, or how about the wonderful Tooth fairy? If it makes a child happy, and gives them something to play with, who cares? There ARE children in this world, who sadly, do NOT have toys to play with. Looking forward to see this on the store shelves.....just may have to buy eight of them, as that is how many female children in my family & extended family there are, plus one for myself. I'm gonna be chuckling ALL day long after reading all these comments. MP

I want an enchanted charm girl jacket, all I have is this plain old silk embroidered kimono for my my spells and incantations. And look at that "cauldren", mines ugly, just plain ugly (though I do like my lions feet), now that's one pretty cauldren she's got there. I'm jelous!
-
- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 10:24:46 (EST)
My first reaction was disgust that Mattel would try to cash in on my beliefs - but why whould I be different? There are lots of Barbies, all outrageous, and none of them so far has altered any little girl's lifestyle - other than perhaps trying to gain her figure. I think the pink and gold is a cool choice, and if I had her figure I'd have a set made for my next ritual! And to the one who questioned the Dragonflye as a familiar - Why not? LadyDragonFlye

- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 10:18:35 (EST)
People need to get over it!! What a fun fantasy! And as a parent who is Pagan I love the idea!! I hope Mattel doesn't bow to the uniformed. My advice if you don't like something in the store, don't buy it, if you don't like what's on TV, don't watch it. But don't pitch a fit and make things hard for those of us who do want to buy it and who do want to watch it!! My daughter is grown, but I'll be sending my hubby off to get Kayla as soon as I see it in my stores! BTW, we need more Bewitched Barbies on the market LOL!

- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 10:14:33 (EST)
When did Barbie's neck get so long? I remember her looking more realistic when I was a kid. And I just noticed something else last week when I babysat my niece - I noticed that Ken has underwear on, but Barbie doesn't. What's with that? Totally nude underneath Barbie but modestly covered with breifs Ken? Well hey, it's just a doll right? RIGHT???? Get a life guys - it's not always about you. Sometimes it's just a doll.
-
- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 10:01:20 (EST)
At least these dolls are covered up. Wasn't it during the 80's and early 90's that most of these dolls looked like "Barbie the Expensive Whore" with their gold bikinis and high heels? I mean, give the manufacturers a break here - what would they do next? A "thong song" barbie? Personally, I like the supposedly multi-cultural and fantasy Barbies. They're fun and they have pretty costumes. That's all your kid really cares about, not Barbie's politics. No one's going to want overweight & hairy Barbie, or stretch mark Barbie. Real life comes soon enough and lasts too long anyway. Let the kids have a little magic while they still can.

Great Doll. I wonder whats in that spell book, is it 1st degree material or higher? /cackle.Most of the comments here are by toads, I see that spell worked for lil Barbie. If this doll makes some of you sick, wait till the Barbie Goddess doll hits the stands. BB

- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 09:34:41 (EST)
I think this doll will end up with her dragonfly and mixing pot missing about 5 minutes after your toddler takes her out of the package. Give it two weeks and the kid will have given her a "haircut" while playing hairdresser with the "magical enchantress". What do adults think of this doll? Who cares? The last time I checked, my 35 year old friends were not buying barbie dolls to play with. The kids who want to have her will only do so because she has a pretty outfit and shiny pants. If they really wanted to make a Pagan Priestess Barbie, I can assure you she wouldn't be wearing a pink robe. Pink gets too dirty when you drag it around in the woods - or your suburban backyard - and gold lame only looks good on gay men who can sing like Barbara Streisand.

DO YOU KNOW ENOUGH BOUT THE CRAFT TO COMMENT . . I'm buying at least 2 of these dolls to help teach my girls the diffence between what a sterotypical witch is and the real deal . . A SPIRITUAL PERSON WHO CARES MORE ABOUT THIS EARTH AND WOULD NEVER DO IT OR ANY LIVING THING ON IT HARM . . . Do as ye will, but harm none For what you send out comes back to you 3 fold... GET IT.. CJ Waiting for buddist monk barbie..

Oh dear! give it a few months and we'll have 'lizard people conspiracy barbie' complete with electronic disolving features. Tis a nice idea but please grow up. As a pagan I dont find this doll demeaning in the slightest, but I do find it worrying that some *adults* think that lil suzy is gonna become a clone Of Aliester Crowley because mommie bought them this doll! please have respect for yourselves, if for no-one else.
-
- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 09:25:25 (EST)
If Barbie's so cool, how come we have to buy her friends??? Hahahahahahahaha. Lighten up out there! This is just another Barbie in one of her multiple personalities.. Maybe Mattel should change her name to Sybil.

HATE IT! Great job adding more evil and confusion to little girls' worlds.
-
- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 09:17:26 (EST)
Hmm, if they are worried there will be dolls who actually portray the evils in the world and "uh oh, I could end up like this" then please don't get the following Barbies for your children so they don't get the wrong message: Redneck Trailer Trash Barbie - with her fantasy double wide, 6 pack and a Bubba-Ken who lays on the couch all day (comes with Lynard Skynard 8 Track) Abortion Clinic Barbie - (ketchup not included) The Religion Barbie series: Mormom Ken with his 6 or 7 wives JW barbie (she comes complete with briefcase and newsletters but has a habit of knocking on doors at odd hours Catholic Barbie - Goes to mass and confession but teases teen Ken on the school playground *I could go on but I'm sure I totally made some people mad. The point is, it looks to me like a toy, and toys aren't the downfall of our society. If you're worried about your kids, take part in their lives and teach them the morals you want them to learn. And let them have a life and some imagination. Thats what makes us people not machines.

Well folks, its a doll. I have enjoyed reading the comments by everyone. Yes her outfit is gawdy. Its a doll. Yes, someone will buy it. Someone who loves her may actually make a little set of ritual robes for her (or buy a set at a church craft fair, I have seen all sorts of doll clothes at craft fairs in churches!!!) Its not an overblown statement about religions here except by the people who are reading into it that far. Its a freaking doll in a tacky outfit. I would buy it for my niece if it were available where I live. I'm glad I have boys who like the simple non denominational toys, like guns, knives, hockey masks, etc. At least then they don't have any stigmas placed on them other than just being boys.
-
- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 08:37:28 (EST)
Yes! I also want all 3 of these dolls! I was raised Catholic, believe in God and Jesus Christ, and DO NOT push my beliefs on anyone, contrary to the "Religious Right" idiots who go around insisting that everyone who does not parrot their beliefs is a demon in disguise. Can we spell "control freaks" and "brainless followers" here? Jesus would have a field day cleaning house in their churches if he decided to come back now. Ugh. Frankly there are more things in this world than any of us have been granted the ability to comprehend. White Magic (Wiccan) beliefs and practices are good and caring and honor all things living. AND this is a doll, as others have pointed out. Children should be encouraged to use their imaginations. I still enjoy Pegasus and unicorns and Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. What about all those people who read and enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and Mother West Wind and Peter Pan and Wizard of Oz books, among other fantastical fiction? If the stores give in to a few ridiculous protests and pull this doll, I want to be part of a protest against those people who try to tell me how to live! I AM SICK AND TIRED OF SO-CALLED DEVOUTLY RELIGIOUS PEOPLE TELLING ME THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONTROL MY LIFE WHEN I'M NOT HURTING ANYONE!
-
- Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 08:18:54 (EST)
Oh my stars!!! Now the Mattel people are infringing upon my family's ancient belief system. How can they get away with this? Being a retired Anthropologist, & Genealogist, I will state here & now, that the Pagan, Wiccan, Polytheistic designated terms are NOT Religions! The Pagan Path is simply a Way of Life, something as natural as breathing. Having been able to trace our Clan's (bloodlines, tribe etc) for the last 1000 years, our family is listed in the "DoomsDay" tax list book from Great Britain. I, my parents & grandparents, and my children & grandchildren, and all my kith & kin, have all been raised in the Pagan Path, the Pagan Way of Life. It is having a connection with all that is...and all that was..and all that is yet to come...in a never-endind Circle/Cycle of Life, especially Nature, the Earth & elements etc. We have very little dogma, rules, or limitations, save the basics, to impede our growth & pursuit of Wisdom. "Wicca" is a new term coined in the late 1940's, early 1950's by Gerald Gardner, who was responsible for bringing what the Xtian church termed "Witchcraft" out into the general public forum. What next? Catholic Pope dolls? (There have been "Sister" or Nun dolls for ages) Rabbi dolls? Imam dolls? What a farce! However, I intend to track down & purchase a few samples of these Barbie's, to add to my world-wide collection of the art-form depiction of the Feminine Goddess aspect in todays society.

Because currently I have nothing better to do with my time, I'm going to comment on the lovely new Secret Spells Barbie :D First I would just like to point out that I am agnostic, although I have looked into Pagan/Wiccan beliefs, and went to church for a while when I was younger (decided to myself - I was brought up Athiest). I am still without religion :) I also never wanted, and was never bought, any Barbies as a child. There appears to be a big argument going on here :) Christians saying this is evil, Pagans saying quit persecuting us yaddah yaddah yaddah. The strange thing is, there aren't actually that many Christian comments arguing against the dolls. And yet for one comment like this, twenty or so Pagans hit back at them. But that's just numbers :) There has been no claim by Mattel that this Barbie is a "religious figure." As far as I can see, it has no resemblance to Wiccans or Pagans at all - in fact in the description, Mattel doesn't even use the word "Witch." They say that she is a "magical enchantress...one of the Charm Girls." Which to me, just sounds like a lot of fluff, fuzz, and pop-culture. So I think that religion doesn't even come into it. If (and probably when) Paganism becomes a group of religions that is recognised world-wide, and people know that you're not like a "Secret Spells Barbie," then the two images won't be associated any more. But for now, if a little kid asks you whether you do spells like her Barbie, all you have to do is explain to them that no, you don't. And just so I don't sound like I'm on anybody's side - if you think that your child will be influenced by this doll, I don't think you're giving them enough credit. Thanks for reading :)

To the person that said they are a wiccan and matel is teaching young people to use magick the wrong way. Get a life, I know a lot of wiccans and I have seen the magick in use. Nothing ever happens. Just like I know a lot of christians and have never seen someone walk on water. Damn, you people and your religions, do you really need something to believe in, in your life so badly that you believe fairy tales? That goes for wiccans, christians, pagans, muslims and all the rest.
