Baby Beluga — Raffi
Raffi’s Baby Beluga pairs a whale-and-sailboat cover with a varied song collection and an original three-panel listening-postcard activity.

The play at a glance
A little boat beside a very large visitor
A cream-colored whale rises through blue water beside a boat with an orange sail. The cover gives Baby Beluga a whole scene before the first song: open water, a small traveler and a wonderfully outsized neighbor. Raffi’s collection then offers titles that wander from the shore toward a kitchen, a meadow and a train ride.A collection with room to travel
Released in 1980, Baby Beluga brings together Raffi originals and traditional material. The label’s retrospective names collaborators including Ken Whiteley and Bruce Cockburn, with Daniel Lanois as engineer. The retained list includes “Biscuits in the Oven,” “Over in the Meadow” and “Morningtown Ride”—different starting points for a listener’s own pictures.
A family might choose one song at a time, leave a little space afterward, and ask what each person would draw. One picture could hold a wide ocean; another might show a tiny kitchen window. A title can also be the starting prompt for a wholly invented scene.
Make sailboat listening postcards
Fold a sheet of paper into three panels. Give the little boat a harbor in the first, a green shore in the second and an evening sky in the third. Draw it small enough that there is room for a surprising visitor, a lighthouse or a faraway island.
Between chosen songs, let someone add one detail and tell a sentence about the boat’s next stop. Perhaps the harbor baker has sent a basket to the island, or the lighthouse keeper needs help finding a misplaced star. These are your story’s people and events.
Turn the paper over and write a greeting from each place. A companion can answer as the person receiving the postcard. Change the order of the stops on another day and discover how the same three pictures can tell a different journey.
Keep a place for each listener’s picture
Someone who prefers drawing can make the scenery; someone who enjoys speaking can deliver the postcards. The cover’s whale can remain the quiet visitor in every panel, or your boat can meet a new imagined neighbor at each stop.
