The play at a glance

Two buckets, one busy building site

Scoop has a broad yellow bucket at the front, a smaller digging bucket behind the cab and a smiling face between his front wheels. The two ends suggest different jobs: gathering a load, carrying it across an imaginary site and reaching into a pretend trench.

Move a bucket and hear from Scoop

The Playskool leaflet identifies three ways to trigger Scoop’s voice, sounds and music: lift the front bucket, move the backhoe from side to side, or roll the wheels. That gives the vehicle a pleasing rhythm of movement and response as a player carries out a small job.

The cab platform has another role. The guide describes placing an Adventure Bob figure there to hear an exchange between Bob and Scoop, and specifies that the figure is separate. A player can also supply a conversation: perhaps Scoop wants to know where the next load belongs, or Bob needs a clear route to the building site.

Try a three-job dispatch

This is an original Toysit play idea. Draw three large job cards: load, deliver and park. Put a few large, loosely folded paper pieces beside a drawn loading area and mark a destination on another sheet.

  1. Choose a card and announce the job in your own words.
  2. Act out the job with Scoop. A paper cargo can rest in the front bucket; an imagined trench gives the rear bucket a separate part in the story.
  3. Place the completed card beside the destination. Describe which end of Scoop helped and what the next job might be.

For a new round, change just one detail: the delivery point moves, a road becomes a pretend puddle, or a neighbor requests a different load. Keep the route on a clear floor or tabletop and the paper away from the wheels.

Give the building site a story

A drawn bridge, garden or shop provides a reason for Scoop to arrive. One person can describe the job while another moves the vehicle, then swap roles. The toy supplies its recorded responses; the building plans, cargo and conversation belong to the players.
