Hot Wheels Serpent Cyclone
Explore Hot Wheels Serpent Cyclone through its looping route, moving snake and triggered head release, then draw a launch–encounter–reset sequence.

The play at a glance
A moving obstacle on a repeating track
Serpent Cyclone combines looping car travel with a moving snake. Mattel’s B0398 guide matches the coils, tall snake and booster layout in Toysit’s photograph. Its play diagram distinguishes the trigger that releases a car from the impact trigger that releases the snake’s head.
The snake’s side-to-side motion and forward strike create the encounter. A mechanical release gives the round an ending before the parts are prepared again.
Separate the two triggers
One action starts the car’s journey; another produces the snake-head release when the target is struck. Calling both events simply a launch would hide what makes the set interesting.
On a diagram, give the player’s release control one symbol and the impact target another. Then trace the distance between them. The car must travel through the layout before those two events can connect.
Describe movement without inventing a mind
The snake’s motions support a chase story, but the story and mechanism have different jobs. The guide describes side-to-side movement followed by a forward strike. A narrator can give the snake a personality without claiming it recognizes a car or chooses a strategy.
That distinction also makes comparisons with robotic pets more useful: a moving character is not automatically an autonomous robot.
The reset belongs in the sequence
A round has more stages than the dramatic hit. There is preparation, a release, the journey, an encounter and a return to the starting arrangement. Include the quiet stages when explaining how the play works.
For an existing toy, the original guide remains the reference for assembly, supplied parts and reset. Its compatibility qualification means a similar-looking car cannot automatically be assumed to work on the track.
Draw the launch-and-reset sequence
- Make five boxes labeled ready, release, travel, encounter and reset.
- Draw one simple event in each box.
- Use one color for a player action and another for a toy response.
- Add an arrow from reset back to ready.
- Ask a partner to explain the sequence from the drawings, then clarify any ambiguous step.
This independent paper activity explores cause and sequence. It does not replace the manufacturer’s assembly or operating instructions.
The historical record
Original Toysit coverage
The complete original product description and brand-background paragraph remain below. The survival, speed and explosion language is promotional framing. The documented head-release effect is mechanical; it does not imply intelligent behavior or a literal explosion.
Hot Wheels Serpent Cyclone Track Set
This track set is not just about racing - its about survival. The snake moves from side-to-side and lunges at cars but when struck from behind with a Hot Wheels car it explodes. The 4-wheel inline motorized booster allows high speed racing with power take-off and animates the snake. Kid-controlled injector fires and launches cars into the snake's coils. Includes two Hot Wheels cars with snake theme.
Hot Wheels' ability to adapt to trends and interests has kept them relevant over the years. From incorporating movie-inspired cars to embracing digital technology through apps and virtual play, the brand has managed to captivate new generations while retaining its classic charm.
Sources and editorial notes
Mattel’s B0398 instructions were reviewed in the six-page illustrated edition, with the related twelve-page edition used for corroborating text. The assembly and play diagrams match the original image, including the release trigger, moving snake and impact-triggered head release. This identifies the documented design without establishing a particular retailer package or importing H9613 contents. The guide excludes some Hot Wheels vehicles. No mechanism, compatibility or speed was physically tested.
