The play at a glance

A different world beyond each doorway

Kingdom Hearts brings Sora into a journey shared with Donald Duck and Goofy. Its cover gathers the travelers beneath a luminous heart-shaped moon: a fitting invitation to a game of companions, unfamiliar places and doors leading onward. This profile follows the original SquareSoft PlayStation 2 edition pictured here.

Before using a slim PS2: compare its adaptor with the CPSC recall identifiers. If it matches, stop using it and follow the notice’s Sony replacement instructions. This concerns certain power adaptors, not this game.

Explore, choose and return

Sora moves through the same environments in which battles unfold. Climbing, swimming and looking for passages give the journey a physical shape; command choices bring items, spells and companions into the action. Battles proceed in real time, so opening a command choice does not make the surrounding action disappear.

The booklet’s environment diagrams distinguish doors, treasure chests and save points. A destination label helps identify a passage, while a save point offers a place to record progress on a memory card. Jiminy’s journal collects information along the way. For someone watching beside the player, noticing a new doorway or remembering a familiar landmark can become a small shared role.

Try a doorway souvenir gallery

Use a sheet of paper, colored pencils and three small pieces of scrap paper. This original Toysit activity makes a journey of your own.

  1. Draw three doors: perhaps a shell door into a sea library, a patchwork door into a cloud town and a tiny round door into a moonlit garden.
  2. On each scrap, sketch one keepsake from that world. Give it a purpose: a bookmark that remembers the tide, a cloud-town ticket or a seed that shines only in a story.
  3. Write a welcoming message beside each door. Let a visitor choose an order and explain what they bring from one place to the next.
  4. Arrange the keepsakes by color, shape or mood. Change the order and tell a second journey with a different ending.

The gallery is an invented storytelling activity, independent of the game’s quests. A companion can add a fourth door without needing a console or a copy of the game.

Stunning 3D Game

Have you ever pondered the collision of the Final Fantasy and Disney realms? It might seem like an unusual idea, but from a seemingly eclectic beginning, the grand gaming saga of Kingdom Hearts has emerged. Renowned RPG creators Square have been granted extraordinary creative freedom within the vast Disney universe, crafting a game that incorporates everything from The Nightmare Before Christmas to The Little Mermaid. This peculiar blend takes on a new level of oddity as characters as diverse as Tarzan and Donald Duck form unlikely alliances, and the peculiarity deepens when Square introduces their own characters like Cloud, Squall, and Aeris from various Final Fantasy titles. Strangely, this disparity brings about an unintended advantage: the game's storyline becomes intentionally enigmatic, which prevents Square from delving into their characteristic New Age musings about Mother Earth across three CDs. Instead, they've dedicated more time to enhancing the graphics, resulting in a visually striking 3-D cartoon that captivates the eye.

Kingdom Hearts is a video game series that blends characters and settings from Disney's films with those of Square Enix's Final Fantasy series. Created in collaboration between Disney Interactive Studios and Square Enix, the series has garnered a large following since its debut in 2002. At its core, Kingdom Hearts is an action role-playing game that explores themes of friendship, good vs. evil, and the complexities of the heart. Players primarily control Sora, a young boy armed with a magical weapon known as the Keyblade, as he travels through various worlds based on Disney and Square Enix properties to combat dark forces. With the help of iconic characters like Donald Duck, Goofy, and various Final Fantasy heroes, Sora seeks to thwart villains from overtaking the universe and resolve the mystery of the "Kingdom Hearts," a powerful source of energy and existence. The series is lauded for its emotional depth, intricate plot, and its unique combination of Disney and Final Fantasy elements.
