The play at a glance

A lightning-bolt top and a kit for a miniature mystery

Silver trousers and a bright lightning bolt on a dark top give Mystery Squad Barbie her adventure look. Beside her are a green-and-gray pack, small accessories and a large pair of glasses for the player. The original package introduces her as the team’s Night Mission Specialist, inviting a story with clues to follow and a discovery to share.

Turn the equipment into a scene

The package presents light-up goggles and pop-out skates as Barbie’s special equipment. Its small props and child-size detective glasses connect the doll’s role with the player’s. Imagine the team arriving at a decorated hall just as someone discovers that a party invitation has been put in the wrong place.

Barbie could examine the first clue while a friend draws a map of the room. The player moves the characters, supplies their questions and decides where each clue leads. A folded paper case file gives the story somewhere to collect its discoveries.

A team with different jobs

The back of the package introduces four separately sold characters: Barbie for night missions, Kenzie for surveillance, Drew for communications and Shawnee for information. Its illustrated team scene gathers the friends around a headquarters. Those roles can become a simple division of tasks in an invented story: looking, listening, carrying a message and putting the clues in order.

Try giving every character a useful contribution. One notices a ribbon on the floor, another remembers the invitation’s color, and a third knows where the host was decorating. When they share what they found, the answer becomes a small celebration for the whole group.

Make a three-clue invitation mystery

  1. Draw an invitation and choose three places on a tabletop map: a door, a table and a bookshelf.
  2. Place the invitation at the final stop.
  3. Write one clue pointing from the door to the table and another from the table to the bookshelf.
  4. Add a final identifying detail, such as a star drawn on the invitation.
  5. Let a doll, paper detective or another player follow the clues and return the invitation to its host.
