The play at a glance

A headline opens the conversation

A blue box, a sand timer and a red-window card viewer set the scene for a table full of voices. Outburst Remix begins with a headline that hints at a topic. A team decides whether to play or pass, then tries to call out the answers hiding on the card. The fun comes from hearing several minds chase the same idea at once.

Listen for the list

In the documented game, two teams try to match ten target answers during a one-minute turn. The opposing captain uses the viewer to check responses and mark matches. Each match earns a point, with a dice-based bonus at the end of the round. The first team to reach sixty points wins.

Each team has three pass chips. Passing sends that card to the other team and brings a replacement that must be played. It is a small decision made from a headline, before the actual topic is revealed. The H0322 support page labels the game fourteen and up; the printed guide describes adult team play.

Try a headline workshop

Original Toysit activity: between games, choose an everyday subject and invent a headline for it. For “things packed for a rainy walk,” you might write “Clouds on the Calendar.” Say only the headline first, and let the group suggest what sort of topic it could introduce.

Reveal your subject, then invite everyone to contribute an idea in turn. For this separate workshop, collect the group’s suggestions openly instead of working from a hidden answer list. Add a reason to a surprising contribution: a notebook might be for drawing puddle reflections after the rain.

Give the same subject a second headline, perhaps “The Puddle Patrol Is Ready,” and notice how that changes the first guesses. Rotate the headline writer. Finish by choosing a favorite phrase for an imaginary newspaper masthead. All prompts and responses are your own; keep the commercial cards for their regular game.

The historical record

Energetic game with verbal play and quick word association keeps players thinking, laughing, and shouting

Game of verbal explosions where teams compete to yell out ten words listed under a given topic before time runs out. A new version of the game with updated content and packaging. Invented in 1987 by Brian Hersch, Outburst has been licensed by Hasbro since 1994. Outburst is an exciting line that we expect will continue to be a big performer which will become even more relevant with a makeover in the fall, offering fun, wackiness, and topicality for young adults, and families. When the new game version launches this fall, classic Outburst was remixed with hot topics and content to create Outburst Remix. An energetic game surrounding verbal play and quick word association, teams can play or pass when they are given a headline. Upon choosing play, the team finds out the topic and then has sixty seconds to guess the ten words listed on their playing card before the time runs out. Players shout out everything that comes to mind and score points each time they say a word listed on the card. With six hundred relevant topics covering common knowledge and beyond, the game keeps players thinking, laughing, and shouting.

The game Outburst Remix is a modern variation of the classic party game Outburst, which was first introduced in 1986 by Hersch and Company. The original Outburst was known for its exciting, high-energy gameplay where two teams compete to shout out as many items from a given list as possible within a time limit. The Remix version brings new twists and updated topics to keep the game relevant and engaging for today's audiences. While the core mechanics remain similar to the original, Outburst Remix often incorporates modern references and may include different types of media or interactive elements. The game has been a hit for group gatherings and parties, praised for its ability to engage players of all ages in fast-paced, shout-out-loud fun.

Sources and editorial notes

Mattel’s H0322 support record identifies a 2004 release, and its complete four-page H0322-0920 guide was visually reviewed. The guide’s viewer, chips, timer and dice correspond to the photographed components. The archive’s conflicting 1986/1987 origin dates, Hasbro licensing and launch wording remain historical statements, not verified history of this Mattel edition; its speculative media claims are not supported by the guide. The workshop is an original Toysit activity; no physical testing was performed.
