The play at a glance

A beach chair beneath a flowered umbrella

Barbie leans back in a blue chair with her sunglasses on and a flowered umbrella overhead. Her turquoise outfit matches the seaside mood. Rain or Sun Barbie gives that quiet beach scene a change of weather: the umbrella becomes part of a little shower, and the outfit can change with the story.

Carry the chair, then settle into the scene

Mattel's product description explains that the backpack turns into a beach chair, with a clip that holds the umbrella for shade. That gives the player a beginning for the outing: arrive carrying the beach things, arrange a place to sit and welcome a friend.

Imagine a paper path leading from the doll's house to a drawn beach. Along the way, a player might add a snack stand, a postcard shop or a place to watch imaginary boats. Each stop can give Barbie a small choice before she reaches her chair.

A flower pump brings on the shower

The matching manufacturer record describes a flower-shaped pump filled with water; squeezing it makes water fall from the umbrella. It also describes the change from rainwear to beachwear. Toysit’s earlier account adds a jacket, boots and capri pants to the scene.

The weather can become the story's turning point. Perhaps the friends wait beneath the umbrella, invent a rainy-day song or decide to visit the postcard shop. When the sun returns in their story, they can continue the outing. Use adult help and a water-friendly play surface for the water feature.

Give one beach visit two endings

  1. Draw a sun on one card and a rain cloud on another.
  2. Begin a doll or paper-character story with an arrival at the beach.
  3. Choose a card to decide what the weather does next.
  4. Tell how the characters respond and where they go.
  5. Return to the arrival scene, choose the other card and invent a second ending.

This original activity uses drawn weather and player-created events. Add a postcard from each version of the trip to remember how the same beginning led to two different days.

The historical record

Original Toysit coverage

The original toy description and broader play discussion are preserved below as historical coverage.

Barbie is ready for rainy or sunny days.

Don't you hate it when those beautiful, sunny days at the beach turn into brooding skies and then a downpour? So does Barbie, but she's equipped to deal with a change in the weather. For the beach, Barbie has it all: a beach chair, sunglasses, and a mod blue beach ensemble. But when the rain comes, Barbie can slip on her rain jacket, boots, and capri pants and wait until it passes. To bring on the rain, fill the flower-shaped pump with water, attach it to the base of the plastic flowered umbrella, and slip it into Barbie's hand. Give the pump a squeeze and voilà--it's a miniature water fountain, which kids will love (but parents probably won't). This is the part of the experience that should be played outside, so the lawn--not the carpet--gets watered.

A beach-themed doll playset brings the excitement and relaxation of a seaside vacation right into a child's playroom. With elements like miniature sandcastles, surfboards, and even tiny sun loungers, these playsets encourage imaginative role-play and storytelling. Children can create various beach scenarios, from sunbathing and building sand sculptures to beach parties and water sports. The variety of accessories can include everything from swimsuits for the dolls to a tiki bar setup, complete with tropical drinks. This kind of playset not only offers endless hours of entertainment but also gives children a sense of the outdoor adventures that await them in the real world. Whether it's a day of fun in the sun or a beachside sunset party, a beach-themed doll playset captures the essence of summer in a form that kids can enjoy all year round.

Sources and editorial notes

Mattel’s 29179 product record and manufacturer image were reviewed alongside the original Toysit photograph and text. The record confirms the flower pump, raining umbrella, backpack-to-chair conversion and clothing transformation. An exact instruction sheet was not recovered, so this profile describes those documented features and preserves the earlier detailed account below. The original Windows-1252 text has been correctly rendered in UTF-8. The weather-card activity is original; no physical testing was performed.
