Transportation Puzzle
Explore a nine-vehicle peg puzzle with a bus, helicopter and emergency vehicles, then plan three imaginary errands around a paper town.

The play at a glance
A little fleet waiting for its next trip
A yellow school bus, a helicopter, cars and emergency vehicles fill the original Transportation Puzzle photograph. Small red pegs rise from the illustrated pieces, and several vehicles sit below the pale wooden board. Each piece brings an entire vehicle out of the picture.
The original account describes nine removable pieces with matching pictures underneath. A player can choose a vehicle, look for its outline and park it back in place. The same pictures also invite a story: someone is traveling to a station, a library or a park, and the player decides how the trip unfolds.
Notice what makes each vehicle recognizable
Look for the bus’s long row of windows, the helicopter’s rotor and the different shapes of the cars and trucks. A color can be a useful first clue, followed by the position of a wheel or the length of the body.
Try describing a vehicle while another player finds it: “I’m thinking of the yellow vehicle with many windows.” Switch roles and let the next clue focus on a shape. The game can be as short as finding one favorite piece.
Give the vehicles somewhere to go
Draw a town with three places connected by broad paths. A library could be beside the park, while a station sits at the other end of the page. Add a landing spot if a player chooses the helicopter.
Invent a small errand for each destination. Perhaps a character is returning a book, carrying a picnic or meeting a friend. Choose a pictured vehicle for the journey and describe where it goes. A drawn vehicle can travel across the paper while the puzzle piece stays nearby as its picture reference.
Make a town errand board
- Draw a library, a park and a station on a sheet of paper.
- Connect the places with roads or other imaginary routes.
- Choose a vehicle picture for the first trip.
- Tell who is traveling and what they hope to do at the destination.
- Return the puzzle piece to its matching opening, then choose the next trip.
This original Toysit activity also works with drawings of vehicles. Players supply the routes and events; the puzzle’s pictures provide the starting ideas.

Transportation 9-piece Peg Puzzle
Preschoolers are fascinated by all kinds of vehicles. This wooden peg puzzle shows nine different vehicles, including a police car, a fire truck, and an ambulance. Each removable puzzle piece has a laminated picture and an attached red peg to help little hands lift the pieces out of the frame. The same pictures that are on the pieces are illustrated on the board, making it easy for little ones to match pieces when reassembling the puzzle. The puzzle frame is made of natural wood with rounded edges and measures 8.5 inches high by 12 inches wide. The puzzle pieces may also be used as templates for tracing the shapes of the vehicles. This 9" x 12" puzzle has a beautiful full color matching picture under each piece. Small hands can easily remove each piece.
Puzzles that center around the theme of transportation and feature nine different vehicles serve as an engaging and educational tool for children. Each vehicle—be it a car, train, plane, boat, or any other form of transport—introduces kids to the various ways people and goods move around the world. This helps broaden their understanding of the world they live in while nurturing their curiosity. These puzzles not only offer the cognitive benefits typically associated with puzzle-solving, such as improved problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and spatial awareness, but they also serve as a platform for learning about different types of transportation. Parents can use these puzzles as a springboard for discussions about how each vehicle functions and its role in society, thus adding an educational layer to a fun activity.
Sources and editorial notes
The original photograph and product account identify the nine-piece board. Matching complete packaging or instructions for B00004NKKK were not recovered. Under-piece pictures and materials remain attributed to the account, which gives both 8.5-by-12 and 9-by-12-inch dimensions. Later eight-piece vehicle puzzles were excluded as specification sources. The town activity is original; no physical testing or developmental outcomes were measured.
