Connect Four: Board Game and Electronic Handheld
Two ways to play four in a row: a shared upright grid and the electronic opponent in Toysit’s November 13, 2003 report.

The play at a glance
One objective, two different ways to play
The physical Connect Four game puts two players on opposite sides of an upright grid. Each chooses a column and drops a checker, trying to form a line of four while preventing the other player from doing the same.
Toysit’s November 13, 2003 page also covered an electronic handheld. Both original photographs are retained here, with the two formats explained separately.
The board game: choose a column
The original board description and Hasbro’s 04430 record agree on the basic objective: alternate dropping checkers and connect four horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A checker falls onto the bottom of its column or onto the pieces already there.
Look at the landing space before dropping. Will it complete your line, block an immediate threat or give the other player a useful space above it? The pictured set uses red and black checkers; other editions use different colors and may add modes that this older page does not describe.
The electronic handheld: play against a machine

The 2003 report describes a computer opponent, three difficulty levels, hints and a second mode in which checkers disappear from view. Those are claims about the handheld covered then, not features of the physical board.
The yellow device’s exact model number has not been confirmed from the small photograph. Use its own markings and instructions before applying button combinations, power requirements or rules from another electronic Connect Four.
Check the format before choosing an older set
- Physical game: check the grid, supports, release mechanism and both sets of checkers against the matching contents list.
- Electronic game: identify the model and ask to see the display and controls working. A photograph does not demonstrate operation.
- Shared play: the upright board makes both players’ moves visible; the handheld account describes a computer opponent.
- Rules: keep disappearing-checker modes and other electronic features separate from ordinary board play.
The historical record
Original Toysit coverage
The complete earlier text is preserved, including the board-game description, handheld feature claims and general discussion of play. The publication date belongs to the page; it does not establish when every later paragraph was added. The handheld claims remain historical rather than a verified operating guide for every electronic version.
Vertical tic-tac-toe by Milton Bradley
Connect Four Game - Connect Four is like vertical tic-tac-toe. Unlike tic-tac-toe, however (as the name suggests), you must get four checkers in a row. One player has red checkers; the other has black checkers. To play, alternate turns at dropping one of checkers down a slot at the top of the upright grid. The first player to get four checkers lined up in a row in any direction--horizontal, vertical, or diagonal--wins the game.
Connect Four Electronic Game - Checkers has never been the same since Connect Four. Now there's even more of a challenge with Electronic Hand-Held Connect Four. Here, you're going up against a machine. Play the traditional game of trying to get four in a row--horizontal, vertical, or diagonal--while blocking the computer opponent. Add more of a challenge by choosing Game 2: the checkers disappear, and it takes memory and strategy to win. The arrow keys keep you in complete control of the game, and you can even shut off the sound to better concentrate. There are three different skill levels to keep things interesting, or if it's too hard, the computer will offer hints with the press of a button.

Sources and editorial notes
The original source records November 13, 2003. Hasbro’s 04430 board-game record was checked on October 15, 2026 for the shared four-in-a-row objective. An archived handheld-manual listing was located, but its PDF could not be retrieved and an exact model match was not established. The handheld details therefore remain attributed to the original Toysit report. No electronic unit or board was tested. The original cat value remains puzzles; the editorial breadcrumb now leads to Board Games.
