Secret Messages Barbie
Explore Secret Messages Barbie’s yellow locker, symbol stamps and hidden note compartment, then invent a friendly picture-code exchange.

The play at a glance
A yellow locker with a note waiting inside
The yellow locker opens to reveal shelves, stationery and a place for a message. Beside it, Secret Messages Barbie wears a translucent jacket over a bright top and patterned skirt. Her small bag and the locker’s tiny supplies suggest a busy day of writing, delivering and discovering friendly notes.
Write a note with pictures and words
The guide shows twenty small stampers stored in matching-shaped spaces inside the locker door. An ink-pad drawer, paper, stickers and a miniature pencil turn the open locker into a little writing station. A player can combine symbols with words, then fold the finished message for delivery.
Imagine Barbie preparing an invitation for a friend. A picture can hint at the destination, while a few words explain when to arrive. The player chooses the occasion: a picnic, a birthday surprise or a visit to the salon next door.
Turn the knob to discover the message
Following the guide's setup, a folded note goes through the slot at the top of the locker. The front indicator announces a message; opening the locker and turning the top knob reveals it. Resetting the compartment gets the locker ready for another exchange.
The reveal gives the recipient a moment to read, interpret and reply. One player can prepare a note while another invents the answer. Afterward, returning the stampers to their spaces and closing the ink drawer prepares the writing station for its next visitor. Use the matching guide for ink-pad care and protect the work surface from marks.
Exchange a friendly picture code
- Choose three simple symbols and draw a shared key: a sun for outdoors, a cup for a snack and a star for a celebration.
- Write a short invitation using one symbol and a few words.
- Fold it and place it in a paper envelope or toy message compartment.
- Let another player decode the invitation using the key.
- Ask them to send a reply with one new symbol and explain its meaning.
This original activity uses your own drawings and meanings. A folded paper mailbox works well for a whole group of doll or drawn-character correspondents.
The historical record
Original Toysit coverage
The original toy description and broader play discussion are preserved below as historical coverage.
Secret message compartment Barbie.
Casually dressed in a green sweater, a floral print skirt, and a milky plastic bomber jacket, Barbie seems to be hiding something. Her yellow handbag is really a notebook, and what about that 8.25-by-2.5-inch yellow locker? You guessed it; all kinds of goodies are inside. The back of the locker door holds about 20 different small ink stamps, two colored ink pads are concealed in the drawer at the bottom, and there are stickers for decorating the locker. There's a slot at the top of the locker for secret messages, and a sign reads message whenever there's something new in the rotating container. Girls will love helping Barbie doll and her friends create secret messages with their cool lockers. Each doll comes with a doll-sized locker with a secret message compartment, 20 stampers and two ink pads. Each doll also comes with eight sheets of blank stickers, a mini pencil, a pad of paper in a doll-sized backpack, with a cute charm, plus mini folders and chip art books.
The allure of secret messages for children lies in the thrill of the unknown and the excitement of discovery. Sending and decoding secret messages make kids feel like spies or detectives, imbuing everyday play with a sense of mystery and adventure. This kind of play stimulates not only their imagination but also their cognitive skills, as they must figure out how to encode and decode the messages. It gives children a sense of autonomy and importance, letting them in on 'classified information' that they believe is only for them to know. The act of keeping a secret or solving a riddle can also serve to enhance social bonds, as it often involves a level of trust and cooperation with others. Overall, secret messages tap into children's innate curiosity, desire for autonomy, and love of problem-solving, making them a universally appealing aspect of play.
