The play at a glance

A little wall of words to move and reuse

A yellow Word Wall stands inside a red border patterned with stars. Alphabet headings run across the board, with small word tiles arranged below them. A dark storage board and loose pieces sit alongside it in the original photograph.

Toysit’s earlier description presents a tabletop magnetic board for moving familiar words into groups and using them while reading and writing. The appealing part is the visible collection: a word can have a place on the wall, then become part of a sentence or a small invented scene.

Give each word a place

The letter headings offer a way to organize the collection by the first letter of each written word. Choose a tile you can read together, find its starting letter and look for the corresponding heading. A partner can check the placement by pointing to the first letter on the tile.

For a smaller display, work with just a few words at a time. Read them aloud, use each in a spoken sentence and decide which one would make an interesting starting point for a story. The available words will shape the scene you invent.

Try three-word story tickets

In this original Toysit activity, paper tickets carry words from the display into an imagined moment.

  1. Choose three words from the set and read them together. Copy each onto its own paper ticket.
  2. Arrange the tickets in front of you and invent one sentence that uses all three. Add other spoken words wherever the sentence needs them.
  3. Draw the little scene or dictate the sentence for someone to write.
  4. Swap one ticket for a different word. Tell a new sentence and explain how the scene has changed.

For a paper-only version, write your own tickets. For example, little, boat and waits could become “The little boat waits beside the bridge.” These example words are supplied for the activity; they are not a claim about the kit’s contents.

Keep a place for favorite sentences

Give each completed drawing a title and arrange the pictures as a tiny story exhibition. A visitor can choose a picture, read or hear its sentence, then suggest which ticket to change next. Return the original tiles to their headings when the story session ends.

Sorting by beginning and ending letter sounds, rhyming, and theme studies

Many primary classrooms in America have word walls where kids sort words into categories. The sorting can be done in many different ways, from beginning letter sounds to rhyming, theme studies, or ending sounds, to name a few. This portable word wall set sorts high-frequency words--the words that appear most frequently in emergent reading books, such as and, the, etc. For children ages 4 to 8, sorting words is a terrific early literacy activity.

The 17.5-by-13-inch magnetic standup board comes with 131 precut magnets, a magnet storage board, a plastic storage bag, and an activity guide. The letter labels are red on white and the words are a distinctive black on white with a red background. An adult modeling and helping a child to sort the words will contribute to success. This activity is a powerful literacy tool for pre- and beginning readers. Now, a portable Word Wall Set that's just the right size and is easy to use too! Large 17 X 13 magnet board has a fold-out support for standing-up on a table.

High Frequency Words (level 1) is a great interactive learning tool to help kids, individually or in small groups, read and spell those words which lack a predictable spelling pattern. Each set comes with a magnet storage board to hold and organize the magnets when not in use. No velcro or cutting up of word cards is necessary as all the magnets are pre-cut and ready to stick to the magnetic board. Set includes over 130 pre-cut magnets, portable stand-up magnetic board, a magnet storage board, resource guide, and re-usable storage pouch. Blank magnets are included to allow adding new words to the board as they are discovered. Great for small groups or individual use. Grades K - 3rd.

A magnetic word wall is a fantastic educational tool that helps children engage with language in an interactive and tactile way. It allows kids to sort words into various categories like rhyming groups, theme studies, or parts of speech. This hands-on approach to language learning not only aids in vocabulary acquisition but also enhances cognitive skills such as categorization, pattern recognition, and logical thinking. As children physically move the magnetic words into different groups, they gain a deeper understanding of word relationships and language structure. Whether used in a classroom or at home, a magnetic word wall can transform language learning into an active, engaging, and fun experience.

Sources and editorial notes

This profile follows the original photograph and preserved Toysit account. No matching manufacturer guide or complete word inventory was recovered. The original text gives both 17.5-by-13-inch and 17-by-13-inch dimensions, and describes 131 magnets as well as “over 130”; these details remain historical rather than being reconciled into a new specification. Storage pieces, blanks and resource-guide contents are not independently verified. Other magnetic word-wall products are not treated as this edition. Story tickets are original editorial play, without physical testing.
