Spelling Puzzle
Look inside the picture-word idea of Spell-A-Puzzle, with cake, tiger and other illustrated words, then try an original guessing-and-drawing game.

The play at a glance
A picture and a word that belong together
A birthday cake, a tiger, a zebra, a guitar, a whale and an apple appear on the bright yellow Spell-A-Puzzle box in Toysit’s original photograph. Each little picture has its word beneath it, so a familiar object and a row of letters become one small puzzle scene.
The original headline identifies Spell-A-Puzzle by International Playthings. Its match-and-spell idea invites a close look at both parts of the picture: what the object is, and which letters sit under it. A player can begin by pointing to a favorite picture, saying its name and following the printed word from left to right.
Use the picture as a clue
Look for a detail that makes an object easy to recognize. The cake has candles, the zebra has stripes, and the guitar has a long neck. Say one detail aloud and invite another player to find the picture.
Once the picture is found, look at its word together. Point to the first letter, then follow the rest in order. Someone who already knows the word can read it aloud while another player traces the letter shapes on a separate sheet.
Make the clues your own
Try a clue that describes an imagined use: “You might carry this fruit in a picnic basket.” Another clue could describe a scene: “This animal is swimming past a boat.” The answer comes from the picture, while the setting comes from the player.
Add a new word to the game by drawing an everyday object, such as a cup or a sock, and writing its name underneath. A grown-up can help with the spelling. Place the drawing beside the other pictures and invent a clue for it.
Be a picture-word announcer
- Choose a picture from the package, a puzzle you have or your own drawing.
- Give a short clue about its shape, use or imagined setting.
- Invite another player to point to the answer.
- Say the word together and follow its printed letters.
- Draw a new picture-word card and swap announcer roles.
