The play at a glance

Elmo puts his name into the performance

Elmo’s white-and-blue top displays the letters of his name, with tiny red character shapes above them. His arms reach outward beneath his orange nose and wide eyes. The E-L-M-O toy turns that printed name into movement, forming letters with its arms and inviting the player into a spelling cheer.

Letters appear on the shirt and in the arms

Mattel describes Elmo singing the “E-L-M-O” song while using his arms to form the letters of his name. A spelling cheer gives the performance another way to invite participation. The shirt repeats the same idea in a still picture that a player can look at between performances.

Toysit originally covered this toy under the title “YMCA Elmo.” The preserved account connects the tune to “Y-M-C-A” and describes a hand squeeze beginning the song, followed by another squeeze for the spelling invitation. The manufacturer’s name, E-L-M-O, puts the character’s own four letters at the center.

A name gives the audience something to follow

Imagine a small show with Elmo’s name on a sign and a row of toy guests watching. A player could point to each printed letter as part of an original introduction, then give every guest a name card of its own.

Choose names with different lengths and shapes. A short name might fit on one small card; a longer one could stretch across several. Decorate each with a picture that belongs to the character, such as a paw print, a flower or a little boat.

Make the next cheer your own

Try choosing a comfortable gesture for each letter in a name. Pointing to the card, lifting a hand or tracing a shape in the air can all become part of the sequence. Seated and standing performers can choose their own versions.

One person can be the announcer while another follows the cards. Finish with an original greeting for the named character, then exchange roles. The player-made sequence can be as short as a single initial or as long as a whole name.

Create a name banner

  1. Write one letter of a chosen name on each card.
  2. Decorate the cards with colors or pictures connected to that character.
  3. Arrange the letters in order.
  4. Choose a comfortable gesture or a point for each card.
  5. Introduce the name, follow the cards and finish with a greeting.

This original activity works with Elmo, another toy guest or a character drawn on paper. Players create their own words and movements for the performance.
