The play at a glance

A small fair with a coaster, a wheel and a snack stop

A yellow track curves around a pastel Ferris wheel, with tiny cars waiting for their next trip. The wheel’s four seats turn above the track, and a little snack stand gives visitors somewhere to pause. Kelly’s Kiddie Coaster gathers the landmarks of a fair into one small setting, where a player can operate a ride and tell the visitors’ stories.

Turn the crank and follow a car

The hand crank operates the lift assembly beside the Ferris wheel. A little car climbs toward the raised part of the track, then travels around the curved route. The same assembly connects to the Ferris wheel, so the player’s turning gives both parts of the fair their movement.

The guide calls for adult assembly and shows how the track, lift, wheel and supports fit together. During play, hold the wheel’s base steady while turning the crank. Its diagrams also show the doll seat belts and how to tuck long doll hair between the doll and seat.

Make room for the visitors’ stories

Taking a seat, waiting for a turn and choosing a snack give the small figures things to do between rides. The guide includes a little snack stand, printed labels and folded paper popcorn cartons. Dolls can join from the player’s collection.

Imagine one visitor who wants to see the whole park from the Ferris wheel and another who is eager to ride in a car. A player might be the attendant who checks their tickets, announces the next ride and asks what they would like to do afterward. A second player can supply the visitors’ replies.

Make a ticket for three fairground stops

  1. Draw a ticket with spaces for a ride, a view from the wheel and a snack stop.
  2. Give the fair a name and add a small picture of its entrance.
  3. Choose a toy or paper visitor and decide which stop comes first.
  4. Act out a greeting with the attendant at each stop, then mark that space on the ticket.
  5. End with the visitor describing the best part of the fair.

This original Toysit activity works with a drawn fairground or a miniature playset. Make a second ticket with a different route to give the next visitor a new afternoon.

The historical record

Original Toysit coverage

The original toy description and broader play discussion are preserved below as historical coverage.

Barbie amusement park with working ferris wheel

Kelly and her little friends can enjoy their own amusement park rides with this set that includes a working Ferris wheel and a roller coaster with two tiny cars. These little cars also work well on any hard surface as basic transportation for Kelly and friends. The set includes snap-together components in pastel shades to create an oval roller coaster track with a conveyor belt to help the little cars on the uphill climb. A simple crank mechanism powers the conveyor belt and also turns the Ferris wheel, which has four seats with attached seat belts. A snack stand is included with miniature popcorn boxes and plastic candy bars.

An amusement park playset is a microcosm of thrill and excitement, capturing the essence of a real amusement park in a form that fits into a child's playroom. With colorful, intricate pieces that range from roller coasters to Ferris wheels, these playsets allow children to explore their imaginations and engage in creative storytelling. They offer endless scenarios for play, from "operating" the rides to "visiting" the park as a miniature guest, fostering not just fun but also cognitive and social skills. The tactile experience of assembling the rides and the visual stimulation from the vibrant colors and moving parts make the amusement park playset a captivating and educational toy that offers hours of interactive fun.

Both illustrated pages of Mattel’s 88808 Kiddie Coaster guide were reviewed and compared with the retained small Toysit image. They show the lift and Ferris-wheel assembly, hand crank, cars, seat belts and snack stand. This is the coaster set; the separate 88705 Kiddie Rides description covers other rides. The 88808 guide supplies the assembly details and indicates dolls are supplied separately. The fairground ticket is an original activity; no physical testing was performed.
