One Little Sound — Hap Palmer
Hap Palmer’s One Little Sound combines word-and-number songs with instrumental counterparts, plus an original sound-changing puppet workshop.

The play at a glance
A tree full of animals, letters and possibilities
Woodland animals gather around a tree on the One Little Sound cover, with colored vowel letters hanging from a branch. Hap Palmer’s recording gives that letter-filled scene a musical program of words, sounds and numbers. Its titles include a chickadee and a chipmunk, a walking dog and a secret word waiting to be discovered. Two ways to meet the same musical idea
The artist’s product description explains the program’s paired structure: twelve songs with voices, followed by instrumental versions. It also describes pauses that give a listener time to respond before an answer on the recording. Those are documented features of the program, with the exact choices best followed on the copy in use.
The title-song guide focuses on adding and removing beginning sounds. That gives a useful starting idea for a separate paper story: a small change at the start of a word can introduce a completely different object or character.
Try a sound-change puppet workshop
Draw a cat on one folded paper card and a hat on another. Stand them on a table. Say both words slowly enough to notice their beginnings: cat, then hat. Keep the ending and change the first sound.
Now give the two pictures a scene. Perhaps the cat runs a tiny hat-delivery service and has one very important parcel left. One player moves the cat card; another decides who needs the hat and narrates the delivery.
Add a pair of your own, such as a boat and a coat, and build another stop into the story. The coat might be waiting on the boat for a visitor who has forgotten it. Say each pair, notice the changed beginning and let the new picture alter what happens next.
Keep the workshop open to different roles
One person can draw, another can name the pictures and a third can supply the next sentence. Give each card a place to stand so the little scene remains visible. The result is your own puppet story, with words supplying the changing cast.

Songs can be a captivating and enjoyable way to teach phonics to children. The melody, rhythm, and repetitive structure of songs serve as mnemonic devices that help children remember phonetic sounds and rules more easily. Singing phonics songs can also engage multiple senses—auditory, visual, and even kinesthetic if there's accompanying movement or dance. This multisensory approach aids in the reinforcement of the phonetic concepts being taught. Moreover, songs can incorporate rhymes and alliteration, providing a context for understanding how sounds correspond to written letters and combinations. Because songs are naturally engaging, they can make the learning process more enjoyable and less intimidating for young learners. Whether in a classroom or at home, integrating phonics into musical activities creates a fun and educational environment for mastering the building blocks of reading and language.
